Enter the Delta's Parallel Reality

Enter the Delta’s Parallel Reality

  • A futuristic new screen can show dozens of travelers their flight individual information at once.
  • Called Parallel Reality, the screen can display personalized information to 100 people simultaneously.
  • Delta is testing the screen in Detroit’s airport.

It’s time to ditch the crumpled boarding passes and stop staring at thousands of flights on a board, because Delta just science-fictionalized the airport experience.

Through a partnership with California-based startup Misapplied Sciences, the airline has installed a flight information board in the Detroit airport that uses futuristic tech to simultaneously show several travelers personalized information about their flight.

While staring at the same screen — dubbed “Parallel Reality” — up to 100 people can see something entirely different. The screen shows each passenger their gate number, departure time, and even which direction to walk and how long it will take to get there. Here’s how it works.

Passengers must ‘opt-in’ at a kiosk to use the screen

To utilize the screen, passengers have to opt-in to the experience at a kiosk outside of security. Delta

After making it through security, passengers will run into the “Parallel Reality Experience” kiosk, where they can either choose to opt-in to view the screen, or keep walking.

To quell privacy concerns, the screen won’t work for passengers who don’t choose to partake in the experience, Albert Ng, CEO of Misapplied Sciences, told Insider.

“We are not ambiently detecting who you are as you’re walking through the airport,” he said.

People who skip the Parallel Reality screen will just see a nondescript board; None of their personal information will be displayed, nor will they be able to see anyone else’s.

Passengers can use a boarding pass or a face scan to start

The screen will only show your information if you opt-in using a boarding pass or facial scan. Delta

Passengers can try it out either by scanning their boarding pass or using Delta’s digital ID facial-recognition system.

“A relationship is created between your identity and your position, so that the motion camera follows your shape,” Greg Forbes, Delta’s managing director of airport experience, told Insider. “That’s what tells the display which direction to aim your information. As you move through the viewing space, your location is tracked, and your message follows you.”

How does it actually work?

Each person looking at the Parallel Reality board will see their own flight information. Delta

Each pixel in the screen can send different colors of light in tens of thousands of directions — so while one person perceives one color, the person next to them can see another, the company says.

The technology only works in a viewing area in front of the screen, so as soon as a passenger leaves the area, their information is deleted, Forbes said. If you wanted to do it again, you’d have to go back to the kiosk and start from the beginning.

Right now, the screen is only available in Detroit’s airport. But both Forbes and Ng said they envision a number of different uses for it, from Sky Club lounges to places beyond the airport, like stadiums or other entertainment venues.

“It’s simply the tip of the iceberg,” Ng said. “It’s a glimpse into what the future could look like.”

Tips job seekers in the AI industry

Tips for finding a job in the AI sector

The Al industry is hot right now. Experts share tips for finding a job in the sector.

The buzz around OpenAl’s ChatGPT has prompted some companies to consider how they can leverage the tech for specific business needs.

Big technology companies have laid off tens of thousands of workers in the past few months, but workers with skills in artificial intelligence are still in demand.

The hype surrounding ChatGPT and new search engines from Google and Microsoft is intensifying interest in artificial intelligence across many sectors.

The AI industry is vast, encompassing not only buzzy chatbots and conversational search engines but also things like self-driving vehicles. The excitement around OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already prompted some companies to consider how they can leverage the tech for specific business needs. Several news outlets, for example, have tapped the chatbot to generate some content.

“ChatGPT is a good example of how the barriers of using AI are dropping quite substantially and in a very rapid fashion,” Matthew Forshaw, a senior skills advisor at the Alan Turing Institute, told Insider.

For many companies, tools like ChatGPT could be used in an assistive capacity, managed by workers with knowledge of AI tech and ethics, Forshaw said.

Big technology companies have laid off tens of thousands of workers in recent months, but workers with AI skills are still in demand. Jim Monroe of Ada, an automation company specializing in customer service, said that a lot of companies “are still prioritizing AI roles both in terms of the hiring as well as if they are conducting layoffs.”

Insider spoke with five experts about breaking into the field. Here’s their best advice for jobseekers.

1. Build a strong foundation in math and computer science

Having a firm grasp of technical skills around deep learning can help candidates land AI roles with higher salaries.

Many high-paying jobs in the AI industry, such as data scientists and machine-learning engineers, usually require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as computer science or math, experts previously told Insider.

Highly educated data scientists and core AI specialists with technical know-how are still highly in demand despite recent layoffs, Forshaw said.

Ngaire Moyes, LinkedIn’s UK country manager, told Insider that “machine-learning engineer” had been one of LinkedIn’s fastest-rising jobs in the UK for the past two years.

“As AI continues to become embedded into how many organisations operate day-to-day, it is a trend we anticipate will only continue to grow,” she said.

Some experts also recommend learning programming languages and gaining an understanding of AI frameworks, the programming interfaces that serve as building blocks to train and deploy AI models.

“Candidates do have to have baseline programming knowledge at some level,” Ada’s Monroe said. “Programming skills in Java, Python, PHP, C., or Ruby would be fairly common. Natural language processing is really hot right now, but data science and data analytics skills are still in high demand.”

Math and statistical analysis are also important skills for many AI roles, Monroe said. There is an analytic component to correlating data and predictability to ensure the AI is presenting the right answers or outcomes in specific business cases, such as customer service chatbots, he said.

2. Showcase your ability to solve real-world problems

Polo Chau, associate professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Computational Science and Engineering, told Insider that job candidates need to be able to articulate how classroom learning translated to the real world. “You need to connect the practical applications of what you know with the specific problems that your audience is trying to solve,” he said.

For instance, let’s say you participated in a hackathon where you created machine learning programs using different statistical techniques. You should be able to explain to hiring managers how you developed or invented or adapted techniques that led to a significant improvement, and that can be applied to solve a problem, Chau said.

“If you’re talking to a logistics company that’s trying to improve how it routes packages, you can talk about speed improvements. If you’re talking to a healthcare company that’s trying to figure out patient eligibility for studies, you can talk about fairness improvements. If you’re talking to a retailer that’s trying to understand customer trends, you can talk about accuracy improvements,” Chau said.

3. Develop strong presentation skills and cultivate an empathetic mindset

The most successful candidates have strong communication and presentation skills, Chau said.

“Throughout the pandemic, a lot of things have been virtual so people have not had the opportunity to present their work in front of a live audience,” he said. “Presenting on a screen when everyone is in a tiny box involves a different communication style and energy.”

Now that many conferences and networking events are in-person again, candidates need to perfect their elevator pitches. This is true for people looking to work in AI, but it’s also good advice for jobseekers more generally, too. “You need to have prepared a quick summary of what you’ve done,” he said. “And you need to practice it.”

A collaborative and empathetic approach is also key, Asu Ozdaglar, head of MIT’s department of electrical engineering and computer science, told Insider. “You need to know technical concepts around machine learning and algorithms and decision-making, but you also need to be asking, ‘How should those decisions take into account the human context?'”

ChatGPT’s growing popularity illustrates that point, Ozdaglar said. “In many cases these tools will be used to augment human decision-making. So when they’re deployed they not only need to be effective and efficient, but also reliable, fair, and equitable.”

4. Prioritize networking by attending events

As the AI arms race heats up across Silicon Valley, networking has become crucial to breaking into the industry.

Brianne Kimmel, a venture capitalist who founded the Silicon Valley based venture firm Worklife Ventures, said many of the conversations around AI are happening at small dinners or self-funded weekend hackathons. So, it can feel like AI is limited to insiders, she said.

“The technology is accessible to everyone, and no longer limited to PhDs who work at Google, but the deals getting done are happening quickly and quietly,” Kimmel said.

Still, Kimmel— who recently launched a bootcamp for AI startups— suggests that it’s best to jump in and learn alongside early builders. That’s especially true for those who want to break into AI in areas like marketing, sales, or as non-technical operators as there’s no need for formal education.

“My usual framing of the problem is we’re all figuring this out together,” Kimmel said. She invited a dozen women in tech to attend a recent OpenAI hackathon even though they weren’t all ready to make the leap to AI full-time.

“I think it’s super important to come and learn about the technology and to just hear and observe the types of companies that are being built,” Kimmel said. “Six or 12 months from now, if you decide to leave a company, you have exposure to what’s already been built, and areas with white space for starting a venture-scale business.”

Countries that have embraced crypto

Countries that have embraced crypto

Countries that have embraced crypto innovation:

Brazil

The number of companies holding cryptocurrency in Brazil has reached new record highs -the country’s taxation authority recorded 12,053 unique organizations declaring crypto on their balance sheets in August 2022.

The United Kingdom

The Financial Services and Markets Bill, introduced in July, reasserted the U.K.’s intention to become a global cryptocurrency hub. It broadened regulations of stablecoins and coined a new term Digital Settlement Assets (DSA).

El Salvador

At the beginning of 2022, 20% of businesses have started accepting BTC as a payment method. In May, El Salvador welcomed 44 central bankers from developing countries around the world to tackle financial inclusion and discuss Bitcoin at a three-day conference.

The Central African Republic

In April, Central African Republic (CAR) became the first nation on the continent to legalize the use of cryptocurrencies in the financial markets. The cryptocurrency bill allowed traders and businesses to make crypto payments and also make way for tax payments in crypto through authorized entities.

United Arab Emirates

In March, Dubai established a legal framework for crypto aimed at protecting investors and “designing much-warranted international standards” for industry governance.

UK proposes measures to protect against the collapse of systemic “digital settlement assets”

In the aftermath of the recent collapse of TerraUSD, a prominent USD-pegged “stablecoin”, the UK government is consulting on new measures to bring systemic “digital settlement asset” firms within the special administration regime applicable to traditional systemic payment systems. The proposals raise a number of questions, particularly in relation to scope and objectives. Stakeholders have until 2 August 2022 to respond.

Regulatory response to collapse of TerraUSD

Last month, a highly prominent algorithmically maintained USD-pegged “stablecoin”, TerraUSD, went into freefall, along with its sister cryptocurrency Luna. The incident sent shockwaves across the crypto markets and reinforced the concerns of many regulators around potential contagion risks. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority promptly put out a reminder to consumers of the risks of investing in cryptoassets. There followed much speculation as to if and how the government might respond, in light of its recent efforts to present the UK as open for crypto business. The government has now published a consultation paper outlining proposals intended to mitigate financial stability risks by bringing systemic “digital settlement asset” firms within the Financial Market Infrastructure Special Administration Regime (FMI SAR).

What is the FMI SAR?

The UK has certain “special administration regimes” to deal with the insolvencies of entities like banks and financial market infrastructures, where the usual administration process does not best serve the public interest. Traditional payment systems which are recognised as systemic fall within the FMI SAR. If such a payment system fails, the FMI SAR requires the administrator to pursue an objective of service continuity (i.e. continuing to deliver the failed firm’s services), even if that is not in the best interests of the creditors. This is designed to mitigate the risk of severe disruption to the wider financial sector. The Bank of England has oversight and powers of direction over administrators of entities that fall within the FMI SAR.

Proposals to extend and amend the FMI SAR

The government is proposing to pass legislation (i) to establish that systemic (non-bank) digital settlement asset firms will generally fall within the scope of the FMI SAR and (ii) to make amendments to the FMI SAR regime in order to introduce an additional objective for administrators in these cases (as discussed further below). The proposal contemplates that the Bank of England will be the lead regulator but will have an obligation to consult with the FCA, given the potential for regulatory overlap.

What constitutes a “digital settlement asset” and a “systemic DSA firm”?
The consultation paper defines “digital settlement asset” in rather vague terms. What is clear is that this concept is intended to be broader than the category of “payment cryptoassets” which are to be regulated under the e-money and payment services regimes. The government has previously said that that category will not include algorithmic stablecoins. In contrast, the term “digital settlement assets” is said to include “wider forms of digital assets used for payments/settlement” alongside payment cryptoassets.

The term “systemic DSA firms” is stated to refer to “systemic DSA payment systems and/or an operator of such a system or a DSA service provider of systemic importance”. The paper notes that “[a] payment system may be designated as systemic where deficiencies in its design or disruption to its operation may threaten the stability of the UK financial system or have significant consequences for businesses or other interests.”

The additional objective for administrators of systemic DSA firms
While continuity of service is intended to remain an important objective in the administration of a systemic DSA firm, the government wants to introduce an additional objective “covering the return or transfer of funds and custody assets”. This is intended to reflect the fact that, unlike traditional payment firms, DSAs may allow users “to store value which is then used for the movement of funds between cryptoassets without transitioning into fiat money”. This raises a lot of questions. In particular, in the case of an algorithmic stablecoin which has no (or subpar) market value and which is backed by no legal rights or interests in respect of fiat money, what “funds” are intended to be “returned or transferred”, and by whom? The consultation paper provides little insight into these types of issues.

What’s next?

The consultation remains open for comment until 2 August 2022.

6 hot AI freelancing gigs

6 hot AI freelancing gigs

  • Generative AI is a form of artificial intelligence that can create new content like text and images.
  • Freelancers are relying on AI to increase their productivity, take on more projects, and boost their income.
  • Insider rounded up a list of 6 generative AI side hustles that are helping people earn thousands.

Making pitch decks

Pitch decks are used to help startups convince investors to put money into their ideas. They often take the form of a series of slides that combine facts about a company with an overarching narrative.

Scroll through a site like Upwork, and you’ll see hundreds of listings from companies looking for someone to make them a winning pitch deck.

With technology like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating chatbot, and Tome, an AI-powered storytelling tool, freelancers can churn out multiple pitch decks a week.

Larry Lundstrom, a pastor based in Arkansas, told Insider he makes two to three pitch decks a week using generative AI tools and charges anywhere between $500 to $1,000 per deck.

Publishing books

Between ChatGPT’s capacity to churn out clear and simple text, and AI art generators like Midjourney and DALL-E 2, publishing children’s books has never been easier.

Ammaar Reshi, who works as product-design manager at the financial-tech company Brex, used ChatGPT and Midjourney to write and illustrate a children’s book titled Alice and Sparkle in 72 hours.

The book is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Walmart. Reshi told Insider he’s already sold over 1,330 copies since Alice and Sparkle went on sale in December, and has generated $2,600 so far, noting that Amazon takes a significant cut of the royalties.

Meagan Loyst, the founder of an online community of young investors called Gen Z VCs, used ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 to self-publish a children’s book in less than two hours.

Her book “Show Me What AI Can Do!” is available on Amazon for $2.99.

Overdubbing videos in other languages

Streaming companies like Netflix and content creators on YouTube and TikTok are turning to voice dubbers to translate their videos into more languages and reach a global audience.

With a growing number of A.I. tools, freelancers can try their hand at dubbing too.

YouTuber Kris McCauley, whose videos on generating money online have earned him more than 90,000 subscribers on YouTube, recently began a Spanish channel for his videos.

In a video published on January 5, McCauley said he initially turned to translations.com, which he described as a go-to for many YouTubers, to translate his videos into Spanish. In the video, McCauley said the company quoted him $4,000 for dubbing 100 minutes of footage.

McCauley said he then came across Nova A.I., a software that can translate and add subtitles to videos. Nova A.I.’s “Pro” plan — priced at $18 a month — allows users to translate 300 minutes of footage into 75 different languages, according to its site.

McCauley mentioned he’s saving hundreds of dollars with this new approach — though he’s still relying on external dubbers as well.

Still, he noted that an enterprising freelancer could easily turn dubbing a profitable side hustle with a tool like Nova A.I.

Writing articles

ChatGPT has shocked people with its capacity to articulately string together words. So, it can be a beneficial tool for those trying to earn money generating written content.

Henry Williams, a freelance writer based in London, used the bot to generate a marketing article. To his “horror” he said ChatGPT put together a 600 word article in less than 30 seconds.

Williams noted that the bot’s tone was inhuman and the structure wasn’t particularly sophisticated, but the “key points, the grammar, and the syntax were all spot on.”

After a few tweaks, he said it was something he would have charged at least $615 to write.

Creating resumes

On a site like Upwork, freelance resume writers advertising their services are charging anywhere between $25 to $65 an hour.

And when most of that work is outsourced to ChatGPT, resume writing turns into an easy, money-making side hustle.

“ChatGPT can write better cover letters and resumes than almost any person,” said Brianne Kimmel, a venture capitalist who founded the firm Worklife Ventures.

As the only general partner at what Kimmel calls a “lean firm” Kimmel said that she and her team work with a lot of freelancers and specifically look for early adopters of new tools.

“I’m really excited about AI, because I feel like finally, there’s this new technology that really helps anyone learn a new skill quickly,” she said. “And then there’s new technologies where people can actually monetize those skills.”

Movie making

Aspiring filmmakers with busy day jobs are finding it easier to pursue their passions with generative AI tools.

Jordan Poblete, a corporate strategist with a penchant for movie-making is using ChatGPT and Dall-E 2 to put together a pitch for an independent movie.

“Our particular fim includes magical realism or aspects of magical realism that can’t be created in a real world,” he said, adding that Dall-E 2 has been especially helpful in achieving the right feel.

Poblete said he plans to pitch the movie to producers later this month. Though he said he not sure exactly how much money the movie might generate, he’s certainly hoping for a hit.

Reshi used ChatGPT, MidJourney, among other AI tools to make an animated short within 6 hours. Since it was uploaded to Twitter last month, the video has already amassed more than 7 million views.

While Reshi told Insider he doesn’t have plans to launch into animated shorts right now, he said, “if there’s an idea that’s inspiring enough that is worth monetizing (and I manage to find more time after my day job haha) then definitely!”

Robert Kiyosaki on Charlie Munger

Robert Kiyosaki on Charlie Munger

Robert Kiyosaki, a prominent investor and author of the best-selling personal finance book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad.” has shared his view after American billionaire Charlie Munger’s call for a ban on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC).

Kiyosaki pointed out that while Munger may still advocate for stocks and traditional finance systems, the younger generation is embracing cryptocurrencies because of the legitimacy of their accounting system, he said during an interview with Stansberry Research on February 18.

The renowned financial educator stated that Munger’s pessimism towards cryptocurrencies could be linked to his alignment with the ‘the FED treasury Wall Street crowd!

Kiyosaki further opined that focus should not be placed on the price movement of cryptocurrencies but on the underlying technology.

“Charlie would probably still say buy stocks, but the reason I like cryptos, not Bitcoin, is because of blockchain, and blockchain is an accounting system. It’s more legitimate than the fed or the treasury or Wall Street, so Charlie Munger is in the FED treasury Wall Street crowd, and the younger generations, millennials and below, are in the iPhone crowd,” said Kiyosaki.

Kiyosaki’s comments come in response to Munger’s earlier statement in which the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A vice chairman extended his criticism of Bitcoin while suggesting that people who oppose outlawing digital assets are ‘idiots’. He added that it’s ‘just ridiculous’ anybody would invest in crypto.

Interestingly, the 99-year-old Munger stated that he was not proud of the U.S. authorities for permitting cryptocurrencies.

NFTs on Bitcoin ecosystem

Bitcoin NFTs

Bitcoin NFTs will have a positive impact on Bitcoin ecosystem by improving its security and incentivizing developers to build on the network, according to independent developer Udi Wertheimer.

The number of newly created Ordinals, also referred to as
“inscriptions”, have been spiking in recent weeks, causing a surge in transaction fees and average block size on the Bitcoin blockchain.

According to Wertheimer, Bitcoin NFTs are going to be beneficial for Bitcoin’s security budget: by driving up transaction fees, the creation of Ordinals will incentivize miners to secure the network while the revenue from mining reward will be decreasing with each Bitcoin halving.

“Because the block space is scarce and because there’s demand for stuff like inscriptions, there’s a lot of hope that we will get enough people who want to pay fees in order to keep the Bitcoin network secure, Werthermer explained in a recent interview with Cointelegraph.

Also, Wertheimer noted, Ordinals provide a new use case that will make building on Bitcoin commercially profitable.

“With all of that interest around Ordinals and inscriptions, I expect that there is going to be a very big ecosystem that is built around that, he said.

Wertheimer dismisses the notion, held by some Bitcoin core developers, that creating NFTs is not an appropriate use case for Bitcoin. According to him, in recent years Bitcoin core developers “have ignored what actual Bitcoin users want.”

DAO - Decentralized Autonomous Organization

DAO – Decentralized Autonomous Organization

decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), sometimes called a decentralized autonomous corporation (DAC), is an organization constructed by rules encoded as a computer program that is often transparent, controlled by the organization’s members and not influenced by a central government. In general terms, DAOs are member-owned communities without centralized leadership. A DAO’s financial transaction records and program rules are maintained on a blockchain. The precise legal status of this type of business organization is unclear.

A well-known example, intended for venture capital funding, was The DAO, which amassed 3.6 million ether (ETH) – Ethereum’s mining reward – then worth more than US$70 million in May 2016, and was hacked and drained of US$50 million in cryptocurrency weeks later. The hack was reversed in the following weeks, and the money restored, via a hard fork of the Ethereum blockchain. Most Ethereum miners and clients switched to the new fork while the original chain became Ethereum Classic.

The Bank of England and HM Treasury begin work on a digital pound.

Earlier this week, the Bank of England (BoE) and HM Treasury announced that the joint Bank-HM Treasury CBDC Taskforce has begun preparatory work to issue a digital pound. Following the announcement, the BoE published a consultation paper and technology working paper to illustrate why and how a digital pound could be used. Additionally, the central bank provided data files that informed the CBDC Taskforce’s creation of the consultation and technology working papers. For background, the CBDC Taskforce was formed in April 2021 by Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak, now the current Prime Minister.

The consultation paper provided many takeaways:

  • The digital pound would not replace cash but will reduce the amount in circulation.
  • The development roadmap indicates that issuance would occur no earlier than 2025.
  • There are concerns over bank disintermediation and subsequent short-term interest rate spikes due to a decline in bank reserves.
  • To prevent bank disintermediation, a £10,000-20,000 balance limit for individuals would be instituted.
  • CBDCs are viewed as a means to interdict the proliferation and adoption of non-sterling digital forms of money in the UK and abroad.

Demand for the digital pound would increase the BoE’s balance sheet over time.

The last takeaway implies second- and third-order effects for monetary policy that resemble quantitative easing. Demand for the digital pound switches commercial bank deposits to digital pounds, which forces banks to borrow more reserves in money markets. This would drive up short-term rates relative to the Bank Rate and force the BoE to increase the supply of reserves through its Short-Term Repo Facility to keep short-term rates close to Bank Rate. An increase in reserves would result in an increase in liabilities on the BoE’s balance sheet matched by an increase in assets, resulting in an overall increase in the size of the balance sheet.

Historically, growth in a central bank’s balance sheet stimulates an economy through additional liquidity and incentivizing borrowing / lending activity. However, the BoE anticipates a digital pound will generate only “small changes in the level of reserves.” The BoE remains confident that it would have “mitigants in place to manage these balance sheet changes.” Yet, it admits that the composition and size of the balance sheet, once the digital pound is introduced, are “highly uncertain.”

BTC and ETH experience golden crosses, while their bearish trends begin to vanish.

A month ago, we published a report calling the market bottoms for bitcoin and ethereum. Since then, BTC and ETH have climbed 22% and 17%, respectively. Now that January’s digital asset rally has passed, we can examine the impact it had on long-term technical indicators to determine where these assets might be heading next.

Bitcoin crossed above its 50-SMA on January 4, its 100-SMA on January 12, and its 200-SMA on January 13. The 50-SMA ascended above the 100-SMA on January 25 and the 200-SMA on February 6. The 50-SMA’s cross above the 200-SMA materialized a golden cross on the daily chart. Over the last decade, roughly, golden crosses have foreshadowed positive returns.
